Why Your Gel Manicure Is Still Safe

The EU Ban on TPO: What It Means for Your Gel Manicures

You may have heard that as of September 1st 2025, the EU banned an ingredient called TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) from nail products. If you’re wondering what this means for your gel manicures, here’s the good news: you don’t need to worry.

So… What Is TPO Anyway?

TPO is a science-y sounding ingredient that has been used in many gel polishes. Its job is simple: it helps the polish harden under a UV or LED lamp so your colour lasts beautifully without chips.

It’s been a favourite among brands because:

  • It cures polish quickly and effectively.

  • It works with lots of different lamps.

  • It helps colours stay glossy and vibrant.

Think of it as the “invisible helper” that makes a gel manicure strong and long-lasting.

Why Is It Being Banned?

The EU is phasing out TPO because some studies have suggested it could cause long-term fertility problems in animals if used in very large amounts.

Here’s the important part: the levels of TPO used in nail products are incredibly tiny — thousands of times less than the amounts tested in those studies. Plus, gel polish sits on your nails, not your skin, so your body doesn’t really absorb it.

Still, since alternative ingredients are available, the EU has decided to remove TPO completely to stay on the cautious side.

Will This Affect Your Manicures?

Not really — and here’s why:

  • In the EU: Gel products containing TPO are already off the market. Brands have reformulated to be TPO-free. You may not notice a difference.

  • In the UK: TPO isn’t banned yet, but a similar change is expected by late 2026. Many brands here are also reformulating in advance.

So while you might hear about ingredient changes, the gel manicures you love will still be available, safe, and gorgeous.

What This Means for You as a Client

  • Your nail appointments are still safe and reliable.

  • The industry is moving towards even safer alternatives — which is a good thing for everyone.

The Bottom Line
This change is more about extra caution than immediate risk. As a client, you can relax — the nail industry is already making sure your treatments are safe and up to date. All you need to do is enjoy your next manicure.
