Spider Season
Posted on 7th September 2024
It's that time of year again. It's getting darker earlier and a little colder too and this is when those 8 legged monsters invade our homes looking for somewhere to hide. I read somewhere, many years ago, that all spiders are poisonous, however those in the UK are not able to cause any harm to us for our except giving us a fright.
I totally get it—spiders can be quite the unwelcome guests in our homes. Luckily, there are some natural ways to keep them at bay without resorting to harsh chemicals. Here are a few tips that have worked wonders for me.
First off, cleanliness is key. Regularly vacuuming and dusting can help remove spider webs & egg sacs. Pay special attention to corners, under furniture and other dark, quiet places where spiders love to hide.
Now, let’s talk about peppermint essential oil. Spiders absolutely hate the smell of peppermint. You can make a simple spider repellent spray by mixing 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil with water in a spray bottle. Shake it well & spray it around windows, doors and other entry points. Not only will it keep spiders away, but your home will also smell fresh and minty. Alternatively add a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil to cotton wool balls and place these around spider entry points like window sills and doorways. You can get in touch with me for your peppermint essential oil.
Another tip is to declutter your space. Spiders thrive in cluttered areas, so try to keep your storage spaces organized. Use plastic storage bins instead of cardboard boxes, as spiders are less likely to make a home in them.
Seal up any cracks or gaps around your home. Spiders can squeeze through tiny openings, so make sure to check your windows and doors for any potential entry points. A bit of caulk can go a long way in keeping them out.
Lastly, consider using natural deterrents like vinegar or citrus peels. Spiders dislike these scents as well. You can wipe down surfaces with vinegar or place citrus peels in areas where spiders are commonly found.
There's nothing worse than trying to sleep when you've just seen a spider running around your bedroom. Who knows where it's gone and when or where it will appear again!
I hope these tips help you keep your home spider-free. If you have any other questions or need more advice, feel free to ask!
Take care, Joanne
